The redesign is a little reminiscent of MacphunРІР‚в„ўs applications, specifically Luminar. They have changed the look of the sliders and the general interface elements. Of the new features, the revised interface is the most obvious. I had really hoped they would fix this but I guess it doesnРІР‚в„ўt bother enough people.

This isnРІР‚в„ўt new, but it still annoys me, as both a photographer trying to use the software and as a designer. To have these modal pop-ups constantly interrupting you is bad interface design. If you consider that in every other major photo editing application, all of these notices happen in the background, either in a background task manager like in Capture One, or as a status bar in the interface, like in Lightroom. If you switch to another application, it actually bounces the icon in the dock on MacOS - thatРІР‚в„ўs how interruptive it is. If you want to view an image large, as soon as it loads, you still get the modal popup dialog saying РІР‚Сљloading imageРІР‚Сњ thatРІР‚в„ўs almost like itРІР‚в„ўs from another application. It still does the horrible modal РІР‚СљloadingРІР‚Сњ dialog too. For example, in the browse module, you canРІР‚в„ўt right-click and select any of the merge options, or the options to send to another application by clicking from the film strip, you have to do it form the grid view. There are a lot of inconsistencies in the interface. Sometimes it sits for ages seemingly not doing anything, and other times itРІР‚в„ўs fine. Obviously, itРІР‚в„ўs loading a preview, but thereРІР‚в„ўs no indication that anything is happening. For example, when browsing folders, when you double-click on an image to view large, it sometimes remains pixelated for a long time, without any indication of what is going on. Some things just behave oddly or donРІР‚в„ўt seem fully thought through. Having said that, it still feels clunky and buggy to me. I used it for over an hour without it crashing, although the RAM usage of the application continues to creep up till itРІР‚в„ўs used whatever ram you have available, but it doesnРІР‚в„ўt kill the system like the previous version did.

On1 Photo 2018 does definitely seem better. The new version lists РІР‚Сљimproved stabilityРІР‚Сњ as one of the features, which is kind of a weird thing to be advertising about a shipping product that people have paid for, but anyway. On my MacPro, I could use it for 10 to 20 minutes before it would become unstable and force me to force quit it or risk having to shut down my whole computer. The biggest Issue I had with the previous version was stability. The new version offers a host of new features and improvements, but I was most curious to see if it addressed some of my biggest issues with the last version. Longtime readers of my blog will know I havenРІР‚в„ўt exactly said kind things about the previous version, but I have an open mind, and I would really like to see an improvement. The next version of the On1 Raw application, called On1 Photo Raw 2018 has just been released as a beta, and I thought IРІР‚в„ўd give it a spin.
